We purchased the laptop march of 2016. Last week we noticed a crack starting from just off center on top of the screen. The laptop has never left our home and has never been dropped or abused. We have 5 grown children and owned several laptops in the past, so this is not our first rodeo. The laptop performed well in all other areas so we were really disappointed that this happed. I can only imagine from the multiple posts on here, that this is a common flaw among this series. Shame on me for not researching it enough. Hp support would not cover the cost of repairs. I went ahead and paid the $210 to repair the screen. That amount will be nothing compared to the loss of future sale from our families and businesses. HP used to be a reputable name. Too bad
When I got this used computer the first time I fired it up the monitor had white horizontal lines running about 1/2 way up the screen. As I sat there for about a minute, they slowly receded to the bottom of the screen and didn’t reappear. I wrote it off to a driver glitch or some piece of hardware getting settled in.
I turn a laptop completely off when I know I’m done using it for the day. I’ve noticed that this computer has the white horizontal lines if the computer is shut down for any length of time (longer than a few hours). The longer the computer is left off, the higher up the screen the white lines go when it’s turned back on.
I think it may be important to note that if I leave it in sleep mode and shut the lid it never has this issue. I never use hibernate so don’t know what it does then. Also, when there's a large block of white on the screen I can't see or access anything behind it. None of my icons are visible where it is white, and nothing can be clicked on. The computer goes through its normal startup, and the lines just keep slowly receding until they hit the bottom of the screen, and the computer operates normally after that - for now.
Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this issue? It’s not a major concern right now because I can just put the computer to sleep when it’s not in use, but I’d like to know if it sounds like the graphics card or something major is going bad.

Hello. Many games always tell me I have graphic drivers not updated.
To play Overwatch I uninstalled and updated automatically the graphic drivers. But looking on the site (hp support site for my notebook) they are still not updated and there is 5 drivers to choose from. How to know which one should I get?
Now the drivers have version 8.810.4.1000 but I guess I want probably the 8.830.6.2000 Rev. or the 8.882.2.3000.
Can somebody help?

When attempting to run diagnostic following step 2 of instructutions here, the test fails. As in, the test ITSELF fails to produce any results. Even checking the logs all logs show cancelled tests. There are no results.
Any ideas what might be wrong?

but when i go to nvidia control panel and change it to intregated graphic it work thats weird

I realy NEED an uptodate solution for the intel HD4600 graphics driver it crashes Chrome/Edge/IE all the time as an unsupported Win 8.1 Intel HD4600 Driver.
I see this issue all over the place cant use the Intel Version as not compatible with HP and HP's version is very outdated.

I have a dual GPU one is Intel(R) HD 5500 and the other one is nVidia GeForce 840M. I'm trying to play games but it always fail cause it always uses the Intel one. I want to permanently change to nVidia. How do i fix this ? Thx

we bought around 15 "HP EliteBook 850 G3" and for every notebook a slim docking station. On every Notebook is Windows 10 64-bit installed.
We have the problem, that when the notebook is in the docking station, after some time the external screen goes black for 1-2 secounds and then the picture comes back. We just have the problem with monitors connected with displayport. We don't have the problem with a VGA monitor.
We tried already many differnet drivers and so on, but nothing was working. Recently I've got a new firmware for the docking station version 2.30. The new firmware was a big improvement. It seems like the firmware nearly fixed the problem.
But we still have got one notebook where nothing changed and another notebook where the black screen just appears once every three days. That is already much better. Before the new firmware, everyone had a black screen a few times a day.
Up to now the telephone support was pretty bad. They suggested many silly things, like enabling "secure boot" in the BIOS.
We are HP Gold Partner and we also have some customers with the same problem. We need a satisfactory solution urgent!
Does anyone have a solution or any suggestions?

On a fresh install of Win 10 x64, when the screen is undocked from the keyboard I always get a blue screen with the "critical process died" error.
Device drivers & bios are upto date.

My laptop screen keeps on turning upside-down. when I click ctrl+alt+Up-arrow keys it will go back to normal. But immediately when i click to lunch any application it will turn upside down. It started in the morning when I turn on the system, I restarted and shutdown the system several times, but doesn't work. I am using my office secured network.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 on my little laptop. For the first day the mouse/touch pad was not working at all. Then after I plugged in my other wireless mouse, it all of a sudden started working. So now I can move the mouse around, and click on things, but the scroll does not work and two-finger-double tap does not right-click. I've opened up the mouse settings, and it seems as though the wireless mouse is still plugged in, but it is not! I see nothing about a synaptic (or whatever it's called) touchpad, nothing about enabling it, or settings for it. Please help!

I am getting the video_tdr_failure BSOD; after like 10 days of purchasing this laptop (now I am on day 20)
Tried diagnostics all of them pass. Tried HP Assistant but the video driver crashes even at that point. Updated everything, no fix.
Tried system recovery and the laptop will run for few hours and the drivers starts crashing again.
Online search shows that this might happen due to faulty GPU or V-RAM.
Any known resolution for this or should I start yelling for a refund?

EDIT: [About an hour after posting this, with no further attempts to solve the problem, it solved itself. I have no clue what happened, or whether or not the problem will occur again. For this reason, I'd love to hear any ideas of what caused this. It lasted for about 3 days, with several restarts.]
A few days ago, all of my action keys (the useful buttons that share keys with f1-f12) stopped working. They now behave like normal function keys, regardless of whether or not I'm holding down "fn"
I checked the BIOS settings, and action keys are "enabled." I've reinstalled the BIOS from HP's website, and nothing changed.
I would appreciate suggestions that don't include "do a system restore." This is not a solution - it's covering up the symptoms, just asking for the problem to emerge again. People sometimes wonder why I despise updates that execute without my explicit permission. Well, this is why. I have no idea what updated (I didn't change anything manually), which means I don't know what to roll back.
[Now, a brief rant:
This is just another frustration in the long list of problems with this computer. It has been clunky, slow, and unreliable from day 1. The limiting factor seems to be the hard drive, which sits at 100% usage for about 5 minutes after every boot. I wish I had had time to order the perfect laptop, but I needed an immediate replacement when my old one died, so I'll have to make the best of this one.]
