TL;DR: I'm able to dock my HP ProBook 640 G1on the HP 90W and extend my screen to two external monitors (via DVI and VGA) while still powering my laptop screen. But I'm not able to duplicate my laptop screen to an additional external monitor via displayport. What do I need to do to get this right?
My System:
- Laptop System Model: HP ProBook 640 G1
- Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4300M
- OS: Windows 7 64-bit (SP1)
- Docking Station: DIB HP 90W Docking Station
- ExternalMonitors: Planar PLL 2410W (I have three of them. They each have a DVI and VGA connection)
In my current setup, I connect my laptop to the docking station. I'm able to power 3 screens:
- my laptop screen, which I use as my main screen
- I extend to 1 external monitor via VGA connection through dock
- I also extend to 1 external monitor via DVI connection through dock
In my desired setup, I would continue to connect my laptop to the docking station and power 3 screens:
- 1 external monitor to which I duplicate my main laptop screen (desired connection: laptop > dock > displayport > displayport/dvi adapter > dvi connection on monitor)
- extended monitor via VGA connection (same as before)
- extended monitor via DVI connection (same as before)
In other words, I don't want to use my laptop screen any more. I'd like to be able to just dock my laptop, shut it, and be able to power 3 screens (the same two from before + one additional which duplicates the laptop screen)
The problem,
- Before I setup the additional displayport connection in my "desired setup" above, I see (via Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Display > Screen Resultion) I see monitors 2 (the DVI extension), 1 (the laptop screen), and 3 (the VGA extension)
- After I connect my third external monitor via displayport > displayport/DVI adapter > DVI, I see monitors 3 (the DVI ext), 1 (the laptop screen), 4 (the VGA ext), and 2 (the desired displayport duplication
- I select monitor 2 and select "Duplicate Desktop on 1 and 2" and "Apply". I receive the message "Unable to save display settings".
What's going on?
- I'm currently able to power 3 screens. I essentially just want to switch out my laptop screen for an external monitor. This shouldn't be a problem with the graphics card
- I've considered buying the Plugable USB 3.0 to VGA / DVI / HDMI Video Graphics Adapter so that I can use one of the USB 3.0 outs on the dock to connect to my third external monitor instead. But back to my initial point, I shouldn't need to buy this since my graphics card should be able to handle powering 3 screens
- I've read something about this dock only being able to power via DVI or displayport but not both. Is that the issue? If so, what should I do. Will I need to buy an additional device like the one I linked above?
