Play external DVD's on windows 8 Pavilion DM1

I have an external DVD player with HDMI or Scart connectors and have tried to play DVDs thru my Pavilion DM1 notebook but have been unable to see any recognition of the HDMI connection. Looking at other posts I think the HDMI may be out only.
Is there any work around ?
