Hi guys, I was handed the G6-2143sa I have; for nothing as the user could not get it going. It would turn on and that was it. Showed power lights and battery charging and nothing else!!
I had it for one evening and played with the power and battery without taking it apart and managed to get it to power on correctly. I used Memtest+ and the built-in bios HDD and memory tester and the other diagnostic tools that were available and all reported back good with no problems.
The HDD woud not boot and I had no restores disks; so I completely wiped the drive; at no great loss to the user or myself. I have a copy of Win 7 Home Prem 64bit which came with the machine initially and then got all the HP drivers from the download site here at HP and installed everything relevant along with a ton of windows updates.
I have had this machine for less than a week and I have never had such a headache with one. The only problem I had and still have is with the HD Video driver.
On the specs on the site it specifies an Intel HD4000 however the display driver in windows is HD graphics; I was confused; however with the help of AIDA64 I found out that the CPU has a built-in GPU and it is an Intel HD 2000!! (4000? eh?)
The machine did suffer with a heat problem as well when I had it; I have now corrected that by disassembling the machine and cleaning itout and re-pasting the relevant chips. I have also updated the Bios from F.08 to F.26 (which is the lastest).
I have tried around 8-10 different HD Graphics and HD 4000 drivers; can I get the D3D working either directly or trying to test the winsat util? NO! the machine constantly locks up and freezes. DXDaig shows v11; but the DDI is 10.1; I have a utility from intel that tests the functionality of the B950 and even displays a rotating graphical image and the CPU always completes the test successfully.
SO the last question left is; is there a fault at the hardware level of the chipset or does the machine require a final BIOS update to correct these issues?
What fathoms me is: how did this one work its way out onto the production line? Or has something in the chipset failed? Is it supposed to have a HD 4000 as well as the HD2000?
Does anyone have one of these machines? The weired thing is; is that I can play movies; video's; use it for productivity but anything to do with 3D; it doesn't want to know!!
If anyone coud help or point me in the right direction I would be grateful. (this machine does not have a discreet GPU unit; just in case anyone wonders).
Thanks in advanced
Mark
