I have an HP ENVY 17-3D released at the beginning of 2012, running Windows 7.
It has 1 HDMI port plus 2 additional display ports. The video card is ATI HD 7690M XT, and supports switchable graphics on the fly.
The processor chip is 2nd generation Intel QuadCore i7.
Problem
When I use the displayport connector with an active "Displayport to DVI" cable, my battery becomes undetected, and the builtin laptop screen brightness automatically maxes out at 100% without the ability to reduce its brightness in my customized powerplan settings (100% brightness is to bright for me ). I recently started to use the displayport to send video as an extended desktop to an older Sony LCD monitor which only has DVI instead of the newer HDMI. The HDMI port has now been connected to the flatscreen TV. Even though I converted the laptops HDMI signal to DVI on the old Sony, and just via a monstercable adapter- nothing fancy, I never lost any functionality. This only started to occur when I began using the display port...
However as soon as I revert back to the single HDMI output to any monitor, my battery is viewable again, and I can adjust screen brightness via my powerplan again...
This problem is only apparent when I use the display port...
Lastly, the Catalyst software is the original which came with the machine- I cannot update this because nothing else supports switchable graphics apparently and have had bad luck with newer versions.... if I'm wrong please let me know...
What I'm trying to do
Very simply, the HDMI port of the laptop will connect directly to a SAMSUNG 1080p flatscreen TV. This image will simply be a mirror of the laptops display, which is also the same resolution- 1080p. The old Sony monitor just connects to the Displayport now via an active "Displayport - to - DVI" adapter for extended desktop use.
All in all, it's just 1 flatscreen TV cloned/mirrored to the laptops display at the same resolution (1080p), and 1 smaller screen for extended desktops array. So 3 screens are lit up in total:
Laptop + SAMSUNG TV via direct HDMI (Mirrored and identical resolution- both 1080p)
Sony monitor via displayport using "Displayport - to - DVI" active adapter.
Everything else runs smoothly- I just lose my battery and ability to control my screens brightness, which is huge for us with power outages and needing reduced brightness...
HAs anyone else had this problem, and what do I do?
Any help appreciated...
Thanks much,
Gio
