blank screen after startup

HI a have a problem with my sisters laptop, after switching on it boots into bios ok, then as soon as it tries to load the o/s the screen goes blank but the backlight is on and it stays like that forever. The two lights on the side one of which is the hard drive indicator stay on solid no flashing no hard drive activity.

I thought it might be the hard drive so went into bios and did a hardware test this failed to even start and just hangs every time.

I then removed the hard drive the problem still remained,it goes into bios which shows fine on the screen then the screen flicks once the backlight comes on then it freezes.

I then attached an external monitor and put in a usb bootable linux o/s.the bios shows on both screens flickers once then the  laptop backlight goes on  and no picture. The monitior shows linux booting up  the o/s comes in then freezes after a couple of seconds  every time.when I try the linux  thing with the hard drive installed the external monitor gets no power after bios and goes off ,the laptop freezes with the backlight on. the laptop had shown signs of overheating. It was opened and cleaned.linux hardware test also freezes both screens imediately.Hp ram tests works  ok hp hard drive test freezes

my question is this.

Can a gpu problem affect the internal gpu path whilst at the same time not affect the  external gpu path visualy but still cause the laptop to freeze? Can the classic hp gpu failure allow the bios to work yet knock everything out after post ?

All the Hp's with gpu problems I have repaired had one thing in common they were all stone dead apart from bleeps. or they came on with screen disturbance and or cut off after getting hot.

I ask this with the intention to reflow the gpu but need to know if there is anyone out there who has had this problem and what their solution was. thanks

HP Envy 14 won't turn with newer lid, works with old

I replaced a cracked screen with a complete replacement one piece with cover, screen / digitizer and hinges, basically a new lid.  Year and half later laptop won't turn on, but when I move the lid half way and try it it sometimes comes on, but as soon as I reposition the lid the laptop shuts off.

I change the lid to the old cracked one and the PC works fine.  Question is as follows:

Is there a mechanism that thinks the lid is closed and thats why the laptop won't turn on?

Or is there a chip in the lid that sometimes fails.  Not sure why the newer screen would stop working and old one works fine.  Before I buy another lid and screen I would like to know if this can happen again or what to look for.

Thanks,

Joe

GPU heating up for Probook 4540s while playing games

$

Hi,

My Probook description is below:

Probook 4540s

Core i5-2.5 GHz

8 GB Ram

750 TB Memory

AMD Radeon HM 7500M/7600M series graphic card

Latest BIOS u[dated

Latest graphic card driver installed

The problem is that when I am trying to play any game on my system, it starts hanging/lagging after playing for 10-15 minutes. I installed a hardware performance monitor and the problem is that my GPU is heating up (upto 130 degrees, which is way higher than it should go!)

When I press  Alt+Tab and let it cool down for a some 10-20 seconds, the temperature goes down to 70-75 degrees, which is fine. But if I switch back to game again, within 3-4 minutes the temperature rises above 100 degrees.

Apart from this, there is no heating whatsoever. CPU temperature is not going beyond 75 degrees, fan is running fine and everything is working very smoothly.

Please help me identify the reason for this and provide a solution if possible.

Thanks in advance.

I have updated my pc with Windows 10, but the screen resolution is not ok.

Screen = HP w1907v

I apparently need 1440x900 (I guess),  and this is not featured within the update.

Can somebody inform me how to get the proper driver for this match?

Hi,

I had windows 7 homebasic operating system on my computer but then i tried to updated to windows 10. However i was disappointed to see lot of my computers functions disabled. I tried to update drivers but all in vain. Consequently I formatted my laptop and installed windows 7 professional. Everything seems to work fine except for the brightness can't be controlled and in addition video qualtiy is very poor. So i checked in the display adapters , it shows their Standard VGA adapter instead of Intel HD Graphics 3000. I am trying to download from hp website. But it shows error, download failed. Please help me and tell me what to do.

Graphics failure resulting in blank screen on laptop cannot boot. ProBook 4320s

$

Okay, so, at this point I can only boot into safe mode using another screen (a projector) so I will explain the course of events:

I first noticed a problem about 2 days ago when playing Divinity: Original Sin. This isn't a hardware heavy game so it played on my ProBook 4320s okay without overheating with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 although the frame rate was a bit poor sometimes. I have had problems with overheating in the past playing games and had to change the harddrive once already. I guess I shouldn't play games.

Anyway, while playing, the driver crashed me out of the game and reset itself. Then later, not playing, the driver reset itself and crashed to blue screen with an information message about the driver not being able to restart. I didn't think much of it until it happened again and maybe once more until I got blue screen upon entering windows and then after that I got a blank screen on start up that showed nothing, not even the HP boot logo.

I plugged in my projector to see if it was just the drivers and managed to get into safe mode to roll back the drivers to an earlier set. This seemed to work for a while. I once tried to play and got blue screen pretty much straight away but the error started happening while browsing the internet too. It happened while using youtube and using facebook and both times the errors started initially in resetting the drivers successfully but then descending rapidly into a failed reset and blue screen of death. That blue screen of death on booting to windows then became the black screen and no boot logo that I first got after maybe one or two critical failures.

So I went in again to safe mode and tried the original drivers with the system and now I cannot even get it to boot into windows. Even with the projector I cannot boot to windows as I get instant blue screen and restart. I can only access safe mode so I decided to get the minidump files and come on over here.

Is this a software error or could it be the graphics card failing?

I have uploaded the past couple of days' minidump files to here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0qBgjvad2XLRDJIcUgwdFBERGM/view?usp=sharing

I really hope this is a software problem and can be fixed. I promise never to play games on it again if anyone can get it running again.

I have an okay knowledge of computers for someone without training but will need fairly clear instructions if it comes to anything technical.

Thank you in advance.

LCD Backlight not working

$

Hi guys!

I own an Elitebook 8570W and I've been an idiot. I managed to get water on it. It didn't ruin the laptop, but it did break the screen. However, it works fine connected to an external monitor. After some time, I noticed that the screen was in fact working; I could very faintly see the image on the laptop screen.  Only the LCD backlight is not working.

I started googling and found this site:

http://www.laptoprepair101.com/troubleshooting-laptop-with-backlight-failure/

This told me there were 3 likely defect locations:

- lid switch

- LCD power inverter

- Backlight itself

Now here is where I'm getting lost. I went to check the switch first, and it doesn't seem to be working. If I close the lid, nothing happens. I changed my settings to 'sleep on lid close' but nothing much happened. So it could be this switch is broken. If it were, I'd expect it to be stuck in 'always on' position: always cutting power to the backlight. But shouldn't the laptop then immediately go to sleep if I select the 'sleep on lid close' option?

I wanted to check the power inverter, but I couldn't find it. I expected it to be located below the LCD, but it's not there. Is it buried somewhere deep in the hardware? Do I have to take the entire thing apart before I can check this?

Last option is the backlight. I think it's integrated in the LCD and I'm not quite comfortable tearing the screen open yet. If this is it, replacing the LCD is the easy and relatively cheap option (about €100)

So this is where I am. I'm using the laptop as a desktop now, but I really need it to be portable again soon. I'm tempted to take it to a professional, but it would certainly cost me several hundred euros. Does anyone know how I can ascertain which component is faulty?

Thanks in advance!
