HI a have a problem with my sisters laptop, after switching on it boots into bios ok, then as soon as it tries to load the o/s the screen goes blank but the backlight is on and it stays like that forever. The two lights on the side one of which is the hard drive indicator stay on solid no flashing no hard drive activity.
I thought it might be the hard drive so went into bios and did a hardware test this failed to even start and just hangs every time.
I then removed the hard drive the problem still remained,it goes into bios which shows fine on the screen then the screen flicks once the backlight comes on then it freezes.
I then attached an external monitor and put in a usb bootable linux o/s.the bios shows on both screens flickers once then the laptop backlight goes on and no picture. The monitior shows linux booting up the o/s comes in then freezes after a couple of seconds every time.when I try the linux thing with the hard drive installed the external monitor gets no power after bios and goes off ,the laptop freezes with the backlight on. the laptop had shown signs of overheating. It was opened and cleaned.linux hardware test also freezes both screens imediately.Hp ram tests works ok hp hard drive test freezes
my question is this.
Can a gpu problem affect the internal gpu path whilst at the same time not affect the external gpu path visualy but still cause the laptop to freeze? Can the classic hp gpu failure allow the bios to work yet knock everything out after post ?
All the Hp's with gpu problems I have repaired had one thing in common they were all stone dead apart from bleeps. or they came on with screen disturbance and or cut off after getting hot.
I ask this with the intention to reflow the gpu but need to know if there is anyone out there who has had this problem and what their solution was. thanks
