Dell Flat Panel Monitor shows up as Generic Monitor

I've seen several posts with no solutions.  Just got Touchsmart 15t with a Targus 3.0 docking station.  Dell Flat Panel monitor as second screen quality is very bad.  Device Manager shows the monitor has a generic driver.  I've downloaded the proper driver from the Dell website, but Device Manager won't update with new driver.  It stays generic.  Is there any way to have my second monitor (Dell) display properly with correct driver?  Thanks for your help!

2000-350US laptop says "Generic PnP Monitor" on "Monitor" tab

$

Hi all, I'm sure hoping there's a simple answer for this because it's got me baffled, along with my eyes feeling like they're being barraged every minute while I look at the screen.  And I've been into computers and diagnostics and troubleshooting for a long time so that something like this is basic simple stuff.

In the Display Properties of Control Panel, the "Adapter" tab says "Intel HD Graphics Family" and the "Monitor" tab says "Generic PnP Monitor," and I have triple-checked that the laptop is set for using only its own display.  And there is no external monitor connected to its VGA port.  I've also updated the display/graphics driver to be the most recent, but it's made no change.  I realize the graphics adapter is a separate entity hardware-wise from the display screen even though the monitor is attached by hinges, but I have just gotta' say that this is a new one on me that the screen of a laptop isn't recognized like it should be when the adapter is recognized perfectly.

Quite frankly, I couldn't care less if the "stated name" of the monitor doesn't look or read right, but I do care about the functionality that's supposed to go along with it being recognized correctly.  My need is adjusting the refresh rate to be higher than the joke 60 Mhz that it's limited to now 'cause my eyes can sure feel it and it's enough to call this laptop unuseable in its present state.  The only refresh rate in the list is 60 & the "other modes" is disabled.  I've done some searching in the registy but so far I haven't searched for the right things (or in the right way, of "whole string" or not) because I'm not finding where the refresh rate is stored or the list of modes and refresh rates that shows in that dropdown list when it's not greyed out.

For some background of this laptop:  my parents bought it in Dec. 2011 and I just got it today because they didn't need it anymore, and since they're not technologically adept about Windows settings and Control Panel things, to me it's understandable why it's been this way while they've had it.  The warranty it was under while they had it expired many months ago, so that's not an option, and unfortunately my finances are way too tight to purchase additional warranty time.

Any insight or help, or insanely manual tweaking, will be greatly appreciated, and hopefully eye-opening.

     Thank You,   Kirby

Whilst using a CQ61-427SA the screen started shuudering/shaking making it totally unreadable. However, an attached external monitor worked perfectlyvia the external VGA port. The laptop passed all HP diagnostic tests and the same problem was present whilst in BIOS or when the hard drive was removed. I tested and defragmented the RAM which was found to be in perfect order and experimented with both new and old video drivers to see if it made any difference. The display adapter was uninstalled and reinstalled without success and the unit was stripped down but no loose connections were found, the cooling system is clean and fully functional so heat isn't an issue.

As the external video output was working I concluded that there was a hardware error and replaced the screen panel. Immediate success, all seemed okay but then 2 days later the same issue reoccurred whilst the laptop was in use.

This time I replaced the motherboard to screen panel flat ribbon where upon the problem was resolved until 5 days later when the error came back again. I repeated the HP diagnostics, everything passed so grasping at straws I reverted the laptop to it's original 'factory' condition using the HP system restore. Again success!

The dreaded problem has now returned! I felt the video adapter must be okay as it works on the external port and internally some of the time for long periods. The one observation I would add is that during diagnostic tests the screen graphics did stablise during the short and optimised DST tests. Other than replacing the motherboard which thus far I have avoided are there any ideas what the problem may be?

Any advice or feedback would be sincerely appreciated no matter how trivial.

Best wishes, Neil.

HP Mini 110-3600 sd Screen problem

Dear all,

I have a problem with the screen of my HP Mini 110-3600 sd (product code LD078EA #ABH). Yesterday morning suddenly it became too small for the content, meaning that the bottom part wasn't visible (e.g. the windows bar, I am using windows 7 starter). To be clear the full screen is functional, only if I maximize the view it is actually to short. The evening before it was working fine and I didn't install anything before I turned it off.

I tried installing new drivers and using different screen resolution but nothing seems to work. What I find odd is that when I look op the specs of this laptop it says it runs in 1024x600, however the pc recommends to run in 1024x768 60hZ. (The screen has never been replaced) It seems like the laptop is confused about it size and position, if I choose resolution '1024x600' and 'center screen' it looks like the screen would fit, but it put a black column in the top so that in the bottom it still falls short. And, though I am not sure about this, I believed the laptop used to support a higher resolution before this problem started (1360x768 maybe?).

Below I included a report about the monitor (or driver), if any more info is needed I would gladly provide it (but I am not experienced enough to know what you guys would need now).

W8156-80070002 Error in Netflix Windows 8 app

When I run the NETFLIX Windows 8 App, I get the following configuration error:

W8156-80070002

This error appears to be some incompatibility between the graphics/sound drivers and the application?  I did update the latest graphics driver from NVIDIA for the 650M and it works fine.  So this must be some audio driver issue (BEATS) some a combination of NETFLIX and the drivers...nonetheless, I can use NETFLIX from the web.  I'm curious why these drivers are so old.

Could you research this issue and provide some potential solutions?

Tom

HP Envy Touchscreen m7-j010dx WIndows 8 screen flickering

$

Is there a way to stop the screen flicker on my new HP Envy 17.3 inch Touch screen laptop purchased in early August 2013? The flicker is enough to cause painful eye strain, so I'm not able to use it for long. The flicker is especially noticeable when using things like the Control Panel where you have a white background. It looks like it's bumping up brightness and then bumping it down - back and forth. My 3 year old HP 17.3 inch Windows 7 laptop screen doesn't flicker at all, but it isn't a touch screen.

Thanks for any help.

the famous "white screen"

i have a dv5 - 1251nr laptop with OS, windows vista. it is about 3 years old so it is far past it warranty limit. it began to flicker the white screen i've seen posted many times. at first it was easily remedied by adjusting the monitor. but over time it happened more frequently and was harder to adjust the white away. now i have to keep the laptop open all the way and prop up to be able to view what i'm working on and sometimes this does not help. hooking up the external monitor works, but is extremely inconvenient. if, in fact, this is a loose connection, i would appreciate help on how i could go about fixing it myself (as my funds are limited). thank you in advance.

Replacing switch cover on dv6130us

I purchased a used HP Pavilion dv6130us Entertainment PC.  The on/off button is defective and doesn't work but the system boots up by using the QuickPlay button on the switch cover.  I have a replacement switch cover I wish to install but I am being thwarted by the 2 ribbon cables connected ZIF connectors on the motherboard.  The connectors are small, flat horizontal connectors, rectangular in shape with a small metal clip (?) on each side.  I have carefully tried to push the clips, both forward and to the side, without successfully moving them.  I seem to be missing something, probably a very easy solution, but can't seem to achieve my goal.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Thanks.
