Hey guys. I went to open up my laptop yesterday and the power came on and the lights on the keyboard but the screen did not. I was trying to figure out if it was a physical problem or a software problem. Turns out, when I hooked it up to another monitor with an HDMI cable, the computer is still on and I can use it. Because its a touchscreen, I tried using the screen to browse the Internet and it still worked. So basically, the laptop is still fully functional and the screen works (because I can browse the Internet by using another monitor and the touchscreen is still functional) but the screen itself is not lit. Does this sound like a software issue or a physical issue? What ideas to you guys have to fix it? Thanks
Hey all,
I have an HP dv6700 series dv6780se Pavilion laptop running Vista Home Premium 32-bit. Recently, I've been running into trouble with the display, and I'm trying to narrow down the root of the problem
Sometimes when I'm booting or using the computer, the display will either show black and white lines, or some other color oddities. I've attached some pictures that I took during the malfunction so you can see what I mean.
When the display would work, sometimes Windows would crash with a BSOD. The accompanying error code suggested that it was a display driver problem with Nvidia, as the driver had been updated from the version offered on the device's HP support page. I would also sometimes get an error message from the system tray that the driver had stopped responding, but Windows had resolved the error. However, even after updating the driver to the latest version offered on Nvidia's website, the problem persisted.
I believe that the problem is not a driver issue, but rather a hardware problem. I know this because sometimes the screen will act up even when the laptop hasn't booted into Windows. For example, I'm including another picture that I took while I was running CHKDSK on the machine. The display still went haywire. It also acted up when I was running Startup Repair.
Besides running CHKDSK (which completed without issues), I've also booted the laptop into safe mode successfully, but again, sometimes Windows will either crash or the display will act up.
I've also attached an external display to the laptop, both with HDMI and with VGA, and Windows will usually output the video properly. Sometimes though, I will see the external display show some video artifacts that are similar to the built in screen.
Finally, I also removed the battery and held the power button down to reset the CMOS, but after reinserting the battery and restarting, the display continued to malfunction.
I've researched this issue, and it seems there could be multiple causes. One is an outdated or faulty video driver, which I think I've ruled out. The other possibilites are the screen itself, the inverter board or cable, or the actual GPU on the motherboard could all be faulty.
Does anyone else have any suggestions or ideas for what I could try to narrow down the cause of this issue, and therefore resolve it?

HP ENVY TS m7 Notebook PC -- when connect HDMI cable to TV laptop screen goes blank/black. How to get image both on TV 7 laptop screen. Thanks.
First time I am trying to out put HDMI to an LCD TV. No Luck... I have tried the fn key with f4, plugging in the TV during a reboot. Started looking at the sound panel and noted that HDMI is not an opinion. So I started looking at graphics panel and read a mess of stuff and all indicates it should come up with the things I just mentioned.
What am I missing? it must be real simple.
Thanks!
I have a Split x2 #13-m110dx. I am trying to connect two external monitors. #1 has HDMI from laptop to monitor. #2 is VGA using a j5 create USB 2.0 to VGA adapter. The HDMI connected monitor works fine until I plug in the adapter. The VGA will work fine but the HDMI shows no signal. Any ideas what is causing this?
