Patchy Screen after a hosts file was deleted

Hello everyone, Last November my brother stupidly deleted a hosts file (lmhosts.sam) because "he wanted to see what would happen". I've laughed at him non-stop ever since.

On a more serious note, shortly after this happened, his laptop display started getting "patchy" I don't know how to describe it better but the picture I posted should give an idea. Sometimes, the blue screen of death pops up with a message saying "VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE".

Overtime, I have discovered that when I boot into safe mode to disable the Intel HD Graphics 4600 Display Driver, the problem stops completely (and the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter shows up).

However, when I try to update the Intel display driver, the issue starts again. The laptop also has a 2nd driver for the Nvidia GTX 850M video card that doesn't have any issues. I have installed Windows 10 from scratch twice and the problem still persists. System restore doesn't do anything and I have downloaded drivers straight from Intel and installed them, both the latest release and the previous one. Please help.

Scrolling and type-over not working properly - with clickpad, touchscreen, or mouse

I have the same problem whenever scrolling down folders with my mouse, touchpad, or clickpad on my new laptop: Whenever I scroll down, after 1 to 5 seconds, the scroll bar goes right back to the top - without any input from me. I cannot stay scrolled-down, no matter what I do. I have tried disconnecting my Bluetooth mouse - no change. I have turned bluetooth off - no change. I have updated all drivers - no change. I have uninstalled the clickpad and mouse drivers and rebooted - no change. The only Bluetooth device connected to my computer is my mouse. Also, whenever I try to change the name of a folder, when I'm typing over the existing name to change it, my screen sometimes hops around, skips to other files / folders, etc. Sometimes, this happens as soon as I highlight the file / folder name I want to change. It's often taking me several minutes just to finally change a file or folder name because of this! It's driving me nuts. I even went to get a new bluetooth mouse - no change. I have Windows 10. My "old" laptop (which died a week ago) had the same Bluetooth mouse I started using on my new laptop. I never had this problem with my "old" laptop (Windows 8) - with either the clickpad or the Bluetooth mouse. Can someone help me?

3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 or USB 3.1 to HDMI? [Envy 13 question]

Greetings, i will talk about model HP Envy 13ad013na also known as 2FQ87EAR.
Can this laptop connected to a common Type-C hub with USB and HDMI ports? Or in any other way to connect this laptop to HDMI 1080p monitor?

I took me few hours to find a proper info and still cant find 100% confirmation. Some ppl on Amazon says 'you cant' and one said 'yes you can' so I'm completely puzzled

If not mistaken, this is full spec PDF - http://h20195.www2.hp.com/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c05567407&doctype=data%20sheet&doclang=EN_GB&searchquery=&cc=ie&lc=en

P.s. does HP have any new 13 laptops with 8th gen Intel and MX150 (or similar) GPU?

EDIT1: here is the link as an example to typical type-C Hub - https://goo.gl/jPEC7Q

Purple marks on HP Pavillion Screen

One day there was a small purple mark on my HP Pavillion screen. After a while it got worse and it multiplied. They get even worse when I press on them. It is on both the inside and outside. It makes the display glitchy and messed up. Note that the screen is actually coming away a little at the sides. If I push on the screen, the bottom left hand corner clears up, but when I let go it glitches again. I am using an old HP w2207h moniter for now, but it does not work too good.

TIA.

Secondary monitor does not work after Windows 10 update

Accidentally left my laptop unattended for a few minutes while Windows 10 wanted to install updates.  It installed the updates KB4041994 and KB4058043 while my back was turned.  After waiting almost 90 minutes of lost productivity I found I cannot use a secondary monitor now.  All external monitors return some form of invalid format error.  They worked right before the update.

I have no options to update or rollback display adaptor or monitor drivers.  I've already turned off fast start up options.  What can I do?  And how much longer will Microsoft be in business?

HP TouchSmart 610-1230a Desktop PC - touch screen not working in windows 10

Hi,

I recently updated my system to run Windows 10. Now, when I change to tablet mode, the touch keyboard does not appear and the screen does not respond to touch whatsoever.

I have:

updated to the latest version of Windows 10

checked for driver updates (it reports my drivers are the latest ones)

tried disabling the touch screen and then enabling it

looked through the logs in Device Manager>>Human Interface Devices>>HID-compliant touchscreen>>Events and found an entry suggesting the touch capabilities were not migrated over with the OS update. Please see my screenshot.

Screenshot (14).png

I also tried to calibrate the touch screen for windows 10, but when I type "tablet pc settings" in the search box, nothing comes up, also suggesting the touch capabilities are not being recognised.

Looking at multiple similar problems on the internet shows that there should be an option in Settings>>Tablet Mode>> of  "make Windows more touch friendly" that can be toggled to on/off. My settings do not show this option AT ALL. I have attached a screenshot of what is available on my system settings. This further suggests that my hardware is not being recognised as touch capable.Screenshot (13).png

Any suggestions, bar rolling back to an earlier OS, on how I can enable the touch screen again?

Thanks,

Kat

multiple monitor issue 8460p

Hello, at work i have a elitebook 8460p and i wan't to configure it to have 3 active monitors at once.

according to a table i have found this should be possible using 1 dvi (on the dock) one displayport (dock or notebook) and the internal screen.

this is the info here.

https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c03037709

so the setup i am using should, according to HP themselfs, be working just fine, but it isn't.

this is frustrating since i purchased screens and cables for a fair bit of money trusting that this would work.

is there anything i can do to make it work ?

(not using any adapters at all. straight dvi - dvi cable and a displayport - displayport cable

thanks in advance / Jimmy Möllerström

Connecting two external monitors to my HP Envy 15-as091ms

Hi,

I am looking for a way to connect two external monitors to my HP Envy 15-as091ms to allow for three total screens. I am wondering whether it is possible and what devices I would require to achieve this?

I have heard that some laptops are unable to support two external monitors and regardless of whether you have both plugged it and they are recognised by the laptop it can only display one. Ideally I am after 3 screens with extend function.

I have one monitor plugged in via HDMI and I am wondering whether I can plug another one in somehow via VGA.

I have a usb-c port avaiable on my laptop also.

Would this device do?

Thanks for any help provided in advance

Cracked Screen - HP Envy HP ENVY x360 - 15-ar002na

I have a HP Envy machine with a cracked screen.  However i cannot find anywhere to raise a support fault.  I believe the machine may be out of warranty though so understand there will be a charge for fixing the screen.  Could someone point me in the right direction please to get this logged as a fault so it can be repaired.

Thanks

Laptop display corrupts at more than 90 degrees when opened.

Hi, I bought an HP Pavilion 14 in October 2013 direct from HP. Couple of weeks ago it developed a hardware fault where part of the screen blanks when the screen is more than around 90 degree, i.e. slightly back. The screen normally is capable of going to around 120 degrees. Obviously my 1 year commercial warranty has expired. That leaves the legal warranty that lasts for six years in the UK. https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c03922002?jumpid=re_R11839_uk/en/warrantystatus_legalguarantee. I spoke to support and they told me the following things... - HP do not support the uk legal warranty - The UK legal warranty does not exist in law since 2015 - The laptop is obsolete and therefore HP cannot fix it - Any hardware issue found will be chargeable but the laptop is obsolete so we won't fix it. I was even told that HP do not comply with the legal warranty. I was very shocked to be told all the above as I know this is not actually true. The support rep was also unable to provide a support reference as their system apparently was too slow and failed to generate a number. This is not how one should be treated and HP. I would like to know how I can get my laptop diagnosed and fixed under your legal warranty. The HP support website caters for systems in warranty but is impossible for anything past it's commercial warranty. Why does HP not support the 'uk sales of goods act' and how can one get something repaired when HP simply deny responsibility.....

Reed switch issue Hp 17-p121wm

I disassembed the unit to do a simple memory upgrade and now the laptop will only come on for a few sweconds when the lid/display is opened. It seems the reed switch ( a small transistor on the power button board ) is causing the issue. I tried different memory modules, and put the stock one back in. All timings were matched and same brand of memory was used ( Samsung 4gb PC3L-12800s-11-13-B4 ). Memory does work in another laptop. I did remove the powerboard ( DAY17APB6C0 ) and replace it with a new one with no success. If I put a magnet on it and keep it there to force the reed switch to work, it will turn on the laptop with no display on the LCD ( as this is the function to turn it off ) and it proceeds to boot off the hard drive. As soon as you remove the magnet, display will come on and then turn off in 3 seconds. On the replacement switch pcb, I removed the reed switch to try to get it to work without it, but that did not work. So... now what? I have never in my 25 years of laptop and pc repair seen this behavier where the switch works in reverse and a simple memory upgrade should never cause this issue. All cables were tested and replaced as a diagnostic precaution.

Can the Elitebook 8560p w/dock drive 3 monitors (laptop display plus two external monitors)??
