My laptop (hp power pavilion 15-cb040nd windows 10) is stuck on a black screen with cursor after startup. This is a new laptop delivered to me on 07-09-2017. The hardware seems to work fine. The problems arises after updating the Nvidia bios.
The first time this problem occurred was when I started updating my laptop using the HP Support Assistant. One by one I updated all the drivers available for my laptop. After the Nvidia driver was updated the problem occurred. The laptop starts up fine, but after the windows login the screen goes to black. Start button or right mouse click won’t work / show anything. Luckily control + alt + delete did work. I was able to restart windows in safe mode and tried the following:
- Restart multiple times
- Download and install from the hp support page new nvidia drivers
- Enable and disable those drivers
- Delete my Nvidia drivers
- Install the hp drivers (again)
- Enable and disable (again)
The only thing that worked was a complete factory reset.
Unfortunately the victory was only temporary.
After I was done with the setup of my laptop, Windows update decided that it was time to update. This apparently includes updating all outdated drivers. Which meant a black screen once again. Additionally windows update 'broke’ in the process. When I went into settings and clicked on windows update (in safe mode) the settings menu would hang a few seconds and then close down. Which means that I am unable to look at or undo the specific updates.
I did the factory reset and everything worked again.
The third time happened yesterday evening, this morning. Windows updates are mandatory, so I tried to find a workaround. I thought that by disabling the automatic driver updates my laptop would be safe. I used the instructions on this site http://m.winsupersite.com/windows-10/stop-automatic-driver-updates-windows-10. It told me to go to systems 'control panel’ -> advanced settings -> hardware -> device installation settings -> no to download driver software and additional icons. When I read this right now I don’t think this would have helped. This probably disabled the search for new drivers if new hardware is added to laptop. When I shut my laptop off yesterday windows update was doing the update and i thought I was safe. This morning however windows finished installing the update and i was greeted with the black screen after login. As of yet I didn't do a factory reset and windows update is once again 'broken’ from his update.
Right now I’am trying an image recovery from when it worked with all my settings and programs. After it finished the restore procedure my laptop immediately ran windows update. Rendering the restore procedure useless.
I’am open to new ideas and possible solutions
